UMAY resort, located in the quiet village of Grândola in Alentejo Lioral sub-region, poses as a different getaway experience, aiming at creating a space that allows its users to appreciatte the piece and quiet of the region, to connect further with the spirit of nature and enjoy privacy for life’s simplest pleasures.

UMAY is characterized by a bold architectural proposal, defined by a radial volumetric shape with eliptic and organic shapes that seem to grow organically from the terrain. The cantilevered infinity pool is one of the highlights of the buildings innovative design. The building finds inspiration in the land itself, employing raw materials and techniques based on time-tested local construction practices.

MOQ Engineering partnered with PLANN to develop the structural scheme of the building. The irregular curved and elliptical shapes, combined with the seismic needs that the location poses makes the design and analysis a very complex exercise. Imposed deformations from shrinkage and temperature aswell as the prestressed infinity pool structure were among the main structural challenges overtaken by MOQ and PLANN teams. BIM techonology was a powerfull tool allowing for a full 3D characterization of the buildings complex geometry.
